The Pitfalls of Copying Social Media Strategies

by | Mar 13, 2024

If you’ve ever thought that doing more on social media or emulating your competitor’s strategy could generate more leads, this post is for you.

The internet is awash with claims about increasing followers, booking more appointments, and securing qualified leads, with each proponent promising unparalleled results

But the truth is, no cookie cutter strategy is going to work.

Because your business is different, and it is unique. You have a different product to sell, to a different audience, in a different industry.

The Pitfalls of Copying Social Media Strategies

And when it comes to marketing strategies, one size does not fit all.

Just because one strategy has yielded results for one person, doesn’t mean to say it will for you.

When choosing your marketing strategy, you need to ask is this right for your:

🌍 Audience

– Where are they hanging out?
– What do they respond to?
– Is this how they engage with suppliers?

How do do this:

  • Identify where your target audience spends their time online and focus your efforts there.
  • Understand what content resonates with them and tailor your posts accordingly.
  • Consider how your audience prefers to engage with suppliers and align your strategy to meet these preferences.

🏜 Lifestyle

– How much time will this take up?
– Does the person you’re copying have a team in place? A bigger budget?

The wrong strategy could see you working at 150% when you left employment to have more time for other things.

How to do this:

  • Evaluate the time commitment required for each strategy and ensure it fits within your lifestyle.
  • Consider the resources at your disposal, such as team support and budget, and choose strategies that are feasible for you.

🦄 Personality

– Does this strategy feel natural to you or will it knock you out of shape in the long term?
– Is it sustainable? If not, how long will you give it before changing (short term can have mileage if the content can become an asset)
– Is this how you enjoy spending time?

How to do this:

  • Choose a strategy that feels authentic to you and can be maintained without causing stress or burnout.
  • Assess the sustainability of your chosen strategy. If it’s not long-term viable, plan how and when you might pivot.
  • Ensure the marketing activities you undertake are ones you enjoy, as enthusiasm can greatly impact your success.

And beyond this, is my business ready to convert leads from this strategy?

If your business isn’t structured correctly, it doesn’t matter how many leads you get, you won’t be able to convert them into business.

It has to be right for your business and it needs thrashing out with an experienced coach who will ask you the right questions and help you evaluate each eventuality.
