Writing the Experience Section for Your Current Role
Support your prospects further by giving them a clear indication of what your company offers.
Although your profile is about you, we need to remember that it is not for you. Prospects don’t need a look into the mechanics of your company by understanding the day-to-day function of your job. This is too much information and feels too raw.
Instead your prospect will want to hear about your role in a way that is relevant to them. Ideally it should position you as an expert they feel confident speaking to.
With the Summary locked behind ‘Read More’ and only revealing the first two sentences, we need to make sure this entry makes an impact on a first scan
This entry will be the first bulk of text your prospect sees, so we need to quickly set the context and help your prospect establish whether it is relevant to them.
Generally, we all tend to scan a profile before opting to read. We have to. We simply don’t have time to read every word before deciding if someone is relevant to us or not.
As such we will scan a profile from top to bottom to determine if it is relevant and then opt read on if it is of interest.
We do this by structuring the entry as follows:
- Problem Paragraph
- Your Role
- Three key things
- Call-to-Action

Developing Your Content
Before you start writing, take the time to consider the answer to these questions:
The problem you solve
You only want to write 2-3 lines. You can use the same paragraph or similar to your Summary as long as it doesn’t exceed the recommended length.
Your role
Similar to your summary but written within the context of what we’re about to talk about.
What three services features can you highlight that are relevant to your position?
This is an opportunity to tell your prospect exactly how you help your clients. We want the prospect to either get a further insight into the company that makes them excited to hire you, and/or have them saying ‘I can see this solution working
for me and I like the feel of this company and this person’.
To make the entry easy to scan, and not feel too overwhelming, we need to break the text up into short paragraphs with subheadings.
You might highlight key features from your department and your role, relevant to your client or outline your packages. You can stagger the packages from big to small finishing with your call to action (your gift for prospects).
What do you want a prospect to do as a result of coming to your profile?
Just like in your Profile Summary, we need to tell your prospect what to do next if they are interested in working with you.
Should they:
- Invite you to connect personally
- Call a helpline
- Download a report
- Visit a customised landing page
If you are not in a customer-facing role or don’t want to take direct enquires, you will want to invite prospects to call your customer service department or company, rather than invite you to connect. It is a good idea to state this openly.
These paragraphs have been constructed especially for you. Pick one paragraph from each section and customise your entry until you are happy.

Fourth Paragraph: Your Perspective
Consider using CAPITAL LETTERS for the subtitle to break up the text so the section stand out.
Use a chatty tone of voice outlining the relevance of the service to the problem you solve. Avoid listing features and specifics such as product details and price. This is not a company brochure.
You will have only 2000 characters including spaces for the entry. Try to make entries no more than 3-4 lines when uploaded onto the profile. This is 4-5 lines on the template provided.
Order your entries so one flows logically from one to the other.

To add a new entry to your LinkedIn Experience Section click on the + sign to the right of the section title.
To edit an existing entry, click on the pencil to the right of the entry..

Map out your profile in a word document first [(download your our template here)]
Switch on ‘Share with network’ so it announces your update to your network giving you valuable business exposure.
Click ‘I currently work here’ for the date to remain ‘Date – Present’
Avoid clicking ‘Update my headline’ as this will [overwrite a manual entry] i.e. a headline you’ve written yourself

You can only re-organise open experience entries i.e. Date – Present. If you don’t see the option after adding or adjusting entries, refresh the page. A blue box with three lines will appear next to the entry. Click and hold the mouse on this button and drag to the correct position.

In case this is the first paragraph your prospect reads on your profile, re-state the problem you solve and set the context for what you’re about to say
If you are part of a team, outline your role relevant to what a prospect actually needs to know. Focus on the problem you solve and the value you bring, not your functional tasks.
Outline the packages that you offer so prospects get an idea what working with you might be like. Try to avoid listing features.
Order the packages from big to small with the last being your [Gift for Prospects] which is also your [call to action] and {diagnostic]. This way the person will know what you do and appreciate the last step as it feels easier to them than the previous steps
Include your contact details. .
Use [Rich Content Media] to continue the conversation with your prospect by providing tailored, purposeful content that assists them in their buying decision.
Use a maximum of the 3 items to avoid
Place the experience entry you want the most attention for at the top of the list. For example, if you are looking to win new business this would be your business entry. If you are looking to gain attention for your part-time business place this at the top.
Re-order as needed based on your business focus at anyone time. You can only re-order open positions.
Add your company logo to the entry. For this you will need to start a . Avoid adding your logo as Rich Content Media.
If the company has evolved over time, consider writing an additional entry, one for the past detailing the story of the company, accomplishments and why it has evolved. Close the time period to match the date the new entry starts at.
